Xander

Xander paced in his room, still thinking about what Lucas had said that morning. His heart was so torn. On one hand, he knew his friend was right, but he was also hurt. He couldn’t decide if he wanted to go find him and apologize or yell at him.

Instead, he slammed his hands onto the short dresser, hanging his head as he tried to calm down. Rage simmered in his veins. At Lucas. At Maya. At his parents. But mostly at himself.

He glanced up into the hanging mirror. “How did I get here?” he whispered.

Since escaping this place four years ago, he swore that he’d never let his crappy past affect his life. He’d decided to start over and never look back. He would become a musician and live happily. And he’d succeeded for the most part, but he’d also turned into someone he didn’t like.

Looking at his reflection, he hated the man he’d become.

Well, that wasn’t entirely true. He knew he was a good person, and he was proud of his career.

He wanted to say that it was being back here that was causing him to act like this, but the truth was, it had started long before now. It started when he decided to sleep with his best friend’s girlfriend. It didn’t matter that they were broken up at the time; he knew they were on and off frequently. He knew it wasn’t really over.

Yet, he did it anyway. Partially because he never believed he deserved happiness and had a habit of self-sabotage. Mostly because, in that moment, he was desperate for a distraction.

He was so tired of his parents affecting him after all these years. He was tired of being the man who acted like nothing people said bothered him.

He was tired of the lies.

Snatching up his phone and keycard from the bed, Xander stormed out of his room. He went to the elevator and smacked the down button. As it opened, he glanced toward Lucas’s room, wondering if he should talk to him first. No, there was something else he needed to take care of right now before he changed his mind.

He went over what he planned to say as he made his way to the lobby. The important thing was to tell her the truth. Maya deserved better, and she needed to know that last night, he hadn’t slept with another woman.

When he reached the ground floor, he walked to the coffee cart in the corner. A night without much sleep after a concert meant he needed caffeine before anything. His head pounded as he poured some into a to-go cup.

That was when he heard her.

Xander turned, looking for Maya. She sat at the desk with Eliza, and neither seemed to have noticed him. He was going to approach, but the sadness in her tone made him pause. Then, he heard his name.

“He was just Alex then,” she said.

Taking quiet steps, he moved to stand around the corner of a wall that jutted out. He knew it was wrong.
